This term sees the launch of one of our favourite topics – Fairy Tales. We have discussed how stories were originally told via the tradition of oral storytelling as well as how some characters have hero or villain status, and which we’d rather be! Not content with the daily climb to the top of the stairs each morning, Year 1 has begun our ascent up the Story Mountain to many lands far away and are excited about using this format to create our own imaginative tales later in the term. So far, the children have used the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk to create picture story mountains.
We are impressed with how tall some of our recently planted “beanstalks” have grown, although not entirely convinced they will grow as tall as the one Jack climbed! We look forward to measuring them when we commence our work on measurement.
Mental Health Awareness Week (13th May to 19th May, 2019) provided ample opportunities for discussion about its theme this year - Body Image - and how we think and feel about our bodies. Year 1 emphasised the importance of accepting the difference in our bodies and what they can do regardless of shape, size and ability.
In Gym, each child stated “My body can...” before demonstrating the wonderful twists, turns and shapes their bodies can make. Our discussions also highlighted the link between how pride in our bodies and their capabilities can lead to positive mental health.
