Food and The Human Body

We have painted some ‘Still Life’ pictures of fruit.

Our topic this term has been ‘Food and the Human Body’. We have been learning about the five groups and what makes a healthy and balanced diet. We have learnt all about the ‘Food Pyramid’, which helps us to know which food we should eat more often, in order to get all the nutrients we need. As part of our project, we are growing potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes and runner beans, in the classroom, and, when the food has grown, we are going to eat it all! Talking of eating, can you think of a Maths lesson that you can eat, once the lesson has finished? That’s right – fractions! We have been using lots of delicious fruit and cakes to learn about ½ and ¼. We had to work with a partner and the person whose turn it was to cut up the food had to let their partner choose which piece they wanted. If you didn’t cut the food accurately into equal pieces, then you would end up with the smallest piece!

We also carried out an investigation using Coca-Cola. We set up a Science Lab to find out what effect sugar has on our teeth. Did you know that one can of coke has approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar in it?!! We went to visit the National Gallery too, to look at how artists use food in their paintings. When we came back to class we did some observational drawing and ‘Still Life’ paintings of fruit.

We are now moving on to learn about the Human Body. The body is an amazing machine – it can do all sorts of fantastic things, most of which we aren’t even aware! We are going to learn about our skeleton and how it works and also find out more about our main organs, such as the brain, heart and lungs. It is going to be very interesting!
