Under the Ocean/By the seaside |

Year 2 has been completely waterlogged. Our summer theme is ‘Under the Ocean’. We have been investigating the extraordinary world of the Ocean and have learnt how to classify creatures as mammals, fish, mollusc, crustaceans and reptiles. Our visit to the Marine Museum was heaps of fun and we were lucky to have a hands-on session with a deck simulator and a very real looking cannon. During the Simulator journey we had the opportunity to decide where we went and who or what we got to save. Most of us went to Sydney and saved the sea from a burning oil tanker. The Museum also had an exhibit on the effect of pollution and we were horrified at the devastation caused by drift net fishing. The recycling properties were very interesting. Especially the table top made out of different types of plastic which we thought had a cool rainbow appearance. After our visit, we constructed a big book, retelling our day, which we enjoy sharing with each other and our friends, throughout the school. We have also looked into the reasons why people travel the ocean, with a focus on historical trips of the past. Our discoveries led to us writing some very imaginative stories. |

In this final term, we continue to concentrate on the key areas of literacy and numeracy. This is to consolidate knowledge and skills learnt throughout the year. One of our favourite literacy activities has been making our ‘Fishy Fact’ books. Each book begins with ocean facts that we discovered together, as a class, such as the ocean covers three quarters of the Earth’s surface. We have enjoyed learning about life in the ocean and how different fish survive predators attacking them, either through their camouflage, like the penguin, or through defence mechanisms, like the puffer fish. Our books all include a contents page and have lots of noteworthy facts. Finally, we have made word questions relating to our ocean theme and are now revising all our topics, to reinforce knowledge learnt throughout the year. |
