| Under the Ocean/By the Seaside |

Our topics this term have had a very watery theme! We began by taking it in turns to share the Ocean projects, we did for homework, over the Easter holidays. They were all very interesting and everyone had picked very different things to find out about. Then we started exploring the world’s oceans and learning about the amazing amount of life that exists below the surface. We found out that there are five main oceans – The Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, the Arctic and the Southern Ocean. Next, we investigated the different types of creatures who live in the oceans of the world. We have learnt about mammals, crustaceans, fish, molluscs and plankton, from the largest creature in the ocean (the Blue Whale) to the smallest (microscopic plankton) and we chose one creature each, to research. We have made information books about them, complete with Index pages and we have each made papier mache sea creatures which are hanging from the fishing net, on our classroom ceiling. There is also a beach in our classroom, so it’s like going to the seaside every day! We have also been watching the BBC series ‘Blue Planet’, which is all about the oceans and marvelled at deep underwater trenches that are so big, you could put Mount Everest inside, with room to spare! |

We have also been learning about climate change and global warming and the impact human activity can have on the oceans, coastlines and beaches. Some scientists believe that the temperature of the Earth is getting warmer, but other scientists disagree with them. We have been investigating pollution in the environment and we went to our nearest public waterway, the Regents Canal, to do an environmental audit of the rubbish in the water, using special tally charts. We followed up this visit, in school, by making graphs and charts, on the computer, to record our findings. |
