Friends, Romans, Countrymen Lend Me Your Ears!

In Upper Transition we have been learning all about Ancient Rome. Our trip to the Museum of London was a wonderful way to begin our topic and we haven’t looked back. We have discovered many quirky facts about the Romans and their daily life. For example the wealthy citizens lay down to eat their meals and a lot of their poultry and meat dishes were covered with a fish sauce to disguise the fact the meat was off! However we have been very impressed with how Roman technology and designs influence engineers and people today.
We have taken a really close look at the decorative mosaics Romans had on their floors, walls and ceilings. We have made our own designs and collated them into a pattern book. From these patterns we designed our own mosaic to decorate our class.

  making the tiles

Firstly we rolled out clay and made it into a flat square shape. Next, we cut the clay into tiles and left them to dry overnight. Once dry we painted them all white. Then the tricky part, we laid out the mosaic design and painted the tiles in metallic colours. Once all the tiles were painted we were ready to set the mosaic into the adhesive. Now that it is finished we are very proud of ourselves and love our bright and beautiful Mosaic.
At present we have our trip to Fishbourne Place in Chichester to look forward too
