Famous People-past and present

Using acrylic paints and special canvases, we have painted portraits of ourselves.

Our theme this term is ‘Famous People – Past and Present’. We have been finding out about people who lived a long time ago, as well as people who are alive now and discovering what is it that makes them famous. Using different sources of evidence, such as books, paintings, stories, drawings and television programmes, we have explored the lives of people such as Boudicca, Samuel Pepys, Mary Seacole, Elvis Presley, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Roald Dahl and Francesca Simon. We thought about why these people are famous and why they are remembered.

One way in which you can find out about people who lived a long time ago, is by looking at a portrait of them. People had portraits painted of themselves for many reasons, often to show how important or wealthy they were. Because many people in the past had their portraits painted, we are able to see what people who lived a very time ago looked like, such as Queen Elizabeth I, who lived over 400 years ago! There are often clues in the paintings that tell you about a person's life. When we went to the National Portrait Gallery, we looked at paintings of Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie. She helped Prince Charlie escaped from the Isle of Skye. In the painting of Flora, you could see a small tartan bow on her dress, which is a clue that tells us that she came from Scotland. We painted portraits of ourselves using special acrylic paints on canvas and then hung them in our classroom, creating our own picture gallery.

We created our own portrait gallery in the classroom.
