Children Who Lived 100 Years Ago

Over the last term we have been looking at the lives of children who lived 100 years ago. We have been on a great many school outings, which have included two trips to the Museum of London and a trip to the Geffrye Museum. At the Geffrye Museum we saw loads of historical objects and learnt how very precious tea leaves were. We got to meet a Costermonger at the Museum of London. He was very funny and said we could work for him. He was really surprised that we could all read and write unlike himself and his children.
We have compared the lives of poor and wealthy children and we feel extremely lucky that we do not have to go to work or be a chimney sweep. We have been doing manyl activities throughout our topic and really enjoyed learning how to cross stitch. It was a little tricky to begin with but, with a bit of practice, we are feeling very confident. A hundred years ago only girls would have cross stitched but, in our class, the boys cross stitch as well…!

Our bookwork has been very interesting and each one of us chose our own particular question to investigate. After finding out the answers to everybody’s questions, we know an awful lot of information about the way of life 100 years ago. We are looking forward to our final trip, at the end of term, to the Ragged School Museum, where will meet a servant girl called Polly. We have learnt rhymes to sing to her, that will help her to work especially, on wash day.
Throughout our topic, we have been watching episodes of Magic Grandad. The children in the story are taken back in time and on magical adventures with their Grandad.

We have been learning to tell the time and, after lots of practice and making our very own clocks, we can tell the time whether it be digital or analogue!
