Houses and Homes

The wolf huffed and he puffed and he blew the house down!

Our topic this half term is ‘Houses and Homes - The Three Little Pigs’. We have been learning about the different types of materials that the three little pigs used to build their houses and thinking about where these materials come from. We have been finding out about natural materials that come from under the ground, plants, trees and animals, and synthetic materials, such as plastic, which is made in a factory. Did you know that plastic is made from oil and that glass is made from sand?! One day we thought about all the things that could be made out of different materials and we were amazed by how many things we could think of! We also went to The Science Museum to do a workshop on the Three Little Pigs, and we helped Kate, who was leading our session, to sort out all the materials that would be good for building houses. We learnt about the different materials that you could recycle or use again and we got to act out the story too! It was great fun.

We have also been building our own houses. First we drew plans, on squared paper, by trying to imagine that we had a bird’s eye, or aerial view of the room we had chosen to make. We have decorated the inside of our rooms with wallpaper and carpet, and, after half term, we are going to make the furniture and then put all the rooms together to make three different houses. We went to the Geffrye Museum to find out what homes were like in the past and to look at the kinds of furniture they had in the olden days. We all liked the Edwardian room the best.

After we had read lots of different versions of the Three Little Pigs story, we wrote our own versions of the story. We copied them out very carefully to display on the wall, and drew very detailed pictures of our favourite part of the story. We worked very hard and we are really proud of our work now it is finished.

We are making our own houses in class.
