Africa

Welcome to the land of Africa! We have arrived back from our summer break and landed in the beautiful continent of Africa. We have been reading lots of African fables about the stunning animals that live there. One of our favourite stories is about the ‘Greedy Zebra’ and how he got his stripes. Throughout this half term we have completed an Animal fact sheet. We have investigated where animals live, what they eat and how they move. We have also discovered a lot of interesting facts such as ‘giraffes are pregnant for 20 months!.’ We have illustrated our work and now it is on display in our classroom. We have also been on two trips, one to the Horniman Museum and the other to The October Gallery. At the Horniman Museum we went to the ‘Hands on Africa Workshop’. We saw and held African instruments, dishes, clothes and toys. The toys were made out of recycled materials such as old nugget tins, wire and cloth. We even pretended to travel to an African village and spend the morning at the market.

At The October Gallery we viewed all the fabulous work by Romuald Hazoume. He has made a market stall out of things he has found on London streets. We really liked the green mask he made out of a watering can. We are now making our own African masks. At the Gallery we were put into groups, then made our very own market person out of recycled materials. Now they are hanging up in our classroom. We are currently very busy making masks, kente cloth and tie-dying cloth. Leading up to the end of term break we are going to be learning more about Africa, the countries within it and what makes them so unique. We are going to compare our ways of life to many African ways. As a conclusion to our Africa theme we have a dance company coming into school to teach us how to play African drums!
