Monsters and Mythical Creatures

Our theme this term has been ‘Monsters and Mythical Creatures’. We have been reading a wide range of stories such as ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, ‘The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child’ (which are our favourite stories), as well as Myths and Legends such as ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’ and ‘St George and the Dragon’. We have been talking a lot about monsters and thinking about all kinds of wonderful words we could use to describe them. We have created our own creatures from our imagination and written descriptions of their characters and terrible habits, as well as drawing very detailed pictures of them using colouring pencils and oil pastels. We have also been rewriting our own version of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, adding new twists and turns to the story and creating new mischief for Max to get up to! We have made lots of monsters from various materials, including modelling clay and food – so we could eat them instead of them eating us!!

We have drawn our own Wild Things!

As part of our topic, we recently went to ‘The National Gallery’ to do a workshop on how mythical creatures are represented in art. Alex, who works at the gallery, showed us three different paintings, including ‘St George and the Dragon’ by Paolo Uccello and ‘St Michael triumphant over the Devil’ by Bartomolo Bermejo. Alex asked us lots of questions and we had to look really carefully at the pictures to find out the answers. One of the paintings we saw was painted over 500 years ago, which we thought was amazing! We bought postcards of the paintings we looked at and have drawn pictures of the creatures we saw within them.
