The Impressionists

For the first few weeks of our topic, we concentrated on looking at the paintings themselves and explored the techniques the artists used, such as rough brush strokes and how they made use of colour and light. We talked about how, at the time, the art critics thought the work was terrible, as it was such a departure from the ideas of the time and yet now the Impressionist paintings are some of the most popular and valuable paintings in the world!

After spending a long time looking closely a number of paintings, and watching a video about how Cezanne painted, we tried out some ideas in our sketch books before painting our own masterpieces! We tried to recreate the style of the Impressionists, by using thick paint, a variety of colours and different sizes of brush strokes. After the half term, we will be exploring the lives of the artists themselves and what it was like to live during the period in which they were painting.
