Growing

We planted tomato, cucumber and runner bean seeds in the hope of getting some produce before the end of term. The seeds all germinated and the window sill is now full of flowering vegetables and a very tall runner bean plant. We also planted sweet peas and they have just started to grow. We have also looked at how tall we are and sorted ourselves into a line starting with the tallest and then we did it starting with the shortest and we discovered that the youngest person is not necessarily the shortest even if this year the eldest child is the tallest. We have also discussed baby animals and how they grow into adults and also how baby animals often have different names. For this topic we went on a day visit to Willows Farm and had a wonderful day. We saw many baby animals as well as a displays of owl flying and sheep dogs herding "ducks".

At the farm we watched two sheep dogs trying to herd a flock of ducks through an obstacle course. One dog was very young and had just started his training, he was very amusing as he got very over- excited. The older more experienced dog succeeded in getting the ducks up a climbing frame and down a slide into a bowl of water! The display of owl flying was surprisingly popular and some children were chosen to help. They donned a thick leather glove and the owl flew down and landed on their outstretched hand. At the end of the display the children were shown a very ugly baby owl. During our walk around the farm we met many farm animals including piglets, turkeys, goats and highland cattle.
The farm visit would make a great family day out. Look it up on their web site www.willowsfarmvillage.com
