Under the Sea

we made an aquarium

As part of our topic, the children decided to make an aquarium. A simple box was all we needed! We discussed what should go in it and this led to the making of lots of colourful fish, which were attached and hung from the top. We added shingle, shells, coral and crabs!! The children discovered that looking through a magnifying glass allows you to see all the detail on the shells and the amazing natural patterns that can be found in nature.

Our art work involved exploring many different techniques. We created pictures that used mixed media. In these pictures we used oil pastels, watercolour, paper, fabric, felt pens, string and even sand!

We have used lots of factual books to find out about many different sea creatures. We read about sharks, whales, starfish, seahorses, sqid, puffer fish and even electric eels!!
Alongside this we have read stories, poems and sung songs all linked to the sea theme. The song 'The Octupus's Garden' was the starting point for creating an exciting and very sandy role play area!! It has had treasure buried, maps drawn, and 'x's to mark the spot. One day, when we came to school we discovered a message in a bottle washed up on our beach!! Well we thought we should definitely write back!! We told our stories of who we are and how old we are and also what we look like.
