Experiences

our canal trip

This term, the children had the wonderful opportunity to listen to a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra. They were introduced to many different instruments, which included percussion instruments, woodwind, brass and strings. The children joined in with actions and with songs that they had been practising at school. On our return to school, the children produced their own version of the performance, with children taking it in turns to conduct and play a variety of instruments. They also produced some wonderfully detailed drawings .

Another trip, was our yearly trip on a canal boat. The children have the chance to travel towards Camden, on a beautiful boat, through a long tunnel that passes underneath The Angel and then back again. On the way we helped to open some lock gates to allow our boat to pass through. At one point we got soaked as water poured into the front of the boat. All in al,l it was quite a wet day, as it really did pour with rain!!!

During this term something exciting was happening outside our classroom window…..We could see rather a lot of activity in the tree outside. It became obvious that some magpies were building a nest! The children became very excited about observing the magpies everyday and monitoring their progress. It seemed to take a long period of time for the magpies to finally complete their nest. You can still see them flying in and out of the nest. We did some research using the internet to look closely at magpies and their environments.

As mentioned on the other pages, The Sultan’s Elephant picnic was a truly memorable day. On our return to school, the visit produced lots of interesting discussions. The children seemed to remember very specific details about the whole experience. Many children wanted to re-enact the movements of the elephant and the little girl, so we created a dance, to the music that was being played by a French group, on the day. Here is one of the many drawings and paintings we did….
