Canal Trip and The Aquarium

approaching the lock

Our annual trip on a narrowboat along Regent’s Canal was a wonderful day out. We learnt about how a long time ago, horses used to pull the canal boat along. When they came to a tunnel the people had to lie on the top of the boat on their backs and push the boat with their feet!!
Inside the long tunnel which was very dark, we were able to see the reflection of the top of the tunnel in the water. We saw many other reflections along our journey. Paul the skipper put the lights on so that other boats could see us coming through. We had fun making shadow puppets with our hands which we then showed each other on the side of the wall.
We found out that the lock gates were designed to help boats travel uphill and downhill. We had to use all our strength to help to push them open!!

To tie in with our theme on water we arranged a visit to the London Aquarium. Our day started with a trip on the number 4 bus which took us all the way there. We were excited about seeing some of the creatures that we were leaning about. One group had a wonderful talk on sharks and watched as they swam in the tank behind. Did you know that a shark's skeleton is made from cartilage and it has the fin on the back to help it to balance. The other group had a session about seahorses. They were beautiful and we were amazed to find out that the male seahorse gives birth!! We went to an area where you can gently touch rays as they swim past. They felt a bit slimy!! One looked like it was smiling. We also saw a lobster, some clownfish like ‘Nemo’, an enormous moray eel and many other beautifully coloured fish.
