Materials

using a mould and deckle

Our theme on Materials has explored both natural and man- made materials. We have investigated wood, glass, metal, plastic and fabric.

We learnt how lots of materials can be recycled but lots cannot. We have started doing lots of recycling at school so thought this would be a good opportunity to have a go at making recycled paper. The whole process has taken quite a long time, from shredding the paper, to making a pulp. Then we used a mould and deckle to make a sheet of paper. After laying it out to dry on damp cloths, we finally could hang it up and we had our first successful sheet of paper!

A story that we have loved is called 'Lucy's Picture' by Nicola Moon. It tells the tale of a little girl who decides she wants to make a picture for her grandfather and decides to do a collage so that he can feel it. As her grandfather is blind, she realises that this type of picture would be one that he loves. She collects all sorts of wonderful materials to create her collage. We had a go at making our own collages using different textures, from soft to hard and rough and smooth.

Our maths focus has been on 'pattern' and looking at pattern in nature and on our own clothing. We are learning how to create and recognise 'repeating patterns'. Here are a few examples of ones we have made.
