Authors and Refining our Skills

Mr. Magnolia has only one boot!

This term we have focussed on authors who are also illustrators. Our particular favourite and a very popular choice with children is Quentin Blake. His illustrations have a distinct style. We have loved looking for books that he has written and illustrated. A character that is displayed on our display board is Mr.Magnolia. Do you know he has only one boot? We discussed this in great detail and used our imagination to think about why we thought he had only one boot. Many thought he had just lost it, others decided that it sank in the mud or he could not find another one that matched. Another wonderful suggestion was that parakeets took it away!!

Quentin Blake has a great website with activities for children as well as information about exhibitions and events www.quentinblake.com

Oi Get Off Our Train!

John Burningham has also written and illustrated some very popular stories. The book 'Oi Get Off Our Train' has a very strong message about the conservation of animals. The train we made was full of animals that needed protection and it travelled up the stairwell of our school!!
Another one of John Burningham's stories is 'Avocado Baby' which is about a baby who becomes extraordinarily strong after eating an avocado pear!! We wondered if this would happen to us if we ate all our fruit and vegetables!!
He also wrote Mr. Gumpy's Outing and Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car. We experimented with a toy boat and several plastic animals, as featured in the story, to predict what we thought would happen if we added more and more to the boat and how many animals it would hold before the boat sank. It was great to try out our ideas, then observe and reflect on what actually happened.

We spent time preparing food for a vegetable stir fry meal as part of our celebration for Chinese New Year. This involved skills such as chopping and grating. This is a fun way to improve our fine motor skills which we need for learning to write. Then we had a go at trying to eat with chopsticks which required lots of concentration!!
