Autumn

our wall display

During this term we have taken part in a variety of activities linked to Autumn and we have explored all that the season brings. We collected leaves of all kinds including different shapes and colours. As well as leaves, the children collected conkers and acorns to add to our investigative table. We discovered that conkers are great for a wide range of Maths activities such as counting.
The investigative table has constantly changed during the term with artefacts being added for Halloween and then Diwali.
Our wall display was inspired by some songs that we have learnt with our music teacher. Our favourites being 'The Autumn leaves are falling down...' and 'Picking up conkers...'

using hand puppets to retell the story

We discussed how animals gather food during Autumn and get ready for hibernation. This led us to talk about woodland animals and their habitats and we read stories about them. 'Percy the Park Keeper' stories are great for re-telling using hand puppets. This helps with taking on different roles, taking turns in conversation and sequencing of events.

One of the stories that really captured our imagination was 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson'. We explored size as, in the story, there are three owls of different sizes, Sarah the large owl, Percy the middle sized owl and Bill the smallest. We spent lots of time on our paintings paying attention to detail.
