Materials

melting ice cubes

Starting our project on materials coincided with the snow and ice arriving in London. The children discussed the use of ice as a building material. This led to the children using various shapes and containers to make shapes with which they could build. The most useful container proved to be the empty milk carton. They made a good brick shape and could be coloured with food colouring. Ice cube trays filled with coloured water were frozen and then placed on white plates so the children could observe the melting coloured water mix into ‘another ‘ colour! The favourite shapes for playing with were the hand shapes and the half spheres.

Lava and how it is made was and continues to be of huge interest. A child in the group brought in a ‘toy’ volcano to be filled with vinegar and baking powder. This was such a success that the children made their own landscapes and volcanoes and experimented with the quantities of vinegar, baking powder and food dye needed to make an eruption. Great Fun!
