Storytelling

To start off this topic, we have been looking at traditional tales and fairy tales moving on to modern classics.

Personal, Social and Emotional

The children have discussed how various editions of the tales differ from each other. Most preferred the versions where the wolf gets killed! These tales allow opportunities for the children to discuss any concerns or worries they may have. Different tales have different emphases – caring for the sick – Little Red Riding Hood, helping each other- Elves and the Shoemaker, telling the truth – The Emperor's New Clothes.

Communication, Language and Literacy

The children seemed to enjoy the different traditional tales. They listened intently to spot the variety of different endings. When familiar with the stories, many children joined in with the refrains and some predicted the next page of text. The children enjoyed acting out the stories and were heard using storybook language in their play. Various types of puppets were made (by the children) or bought and used in the puppet theatre and in the small world area. This helped the children with their acting and story telling as well as organising the running of the puppet theatre, by making signs and tickets.

Maths

Many of the stories used so far have numbers within the story – Three Billy Goats Gruff, Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Time features in some stories – Sleeping Beauty. Size features in The Elves and the Shoemaker, Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Bears. Length features in Rapunzel and in The Beanstalk. The children enjoyed counting and working out how many characters they needed to act out each story. When selling tickets they had to work out how many to sell and for how much.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

As well as traditional tales, the children have heard stories from different cultures and countries. Many stories feature items that the children had not heard of and so had fun either looking them up in books, on Google, or exploring items brought in to school. Various stories are set in different historical times and it was interesting to hear the children’s views on subjects such as dress and travel.

Physical Development

During gym the children played various games based on the stories to improve their gross motor skills. Their fine motor skills have been improved by cutting /sticking various puppets, rolling and kneading dough for gingerbread men and bread and using stencils.

Creative Development

During music the children learnt songs to go with various stories, listened to pieces of music that told specific stories and made up tunes on percussion instruments to accompany the retelling of some of the stories. The children have painted, drawn and modelled their own variations of characters and scenery, in their play, and have helped to make various displays.

Growing

As usual we started the year long topic of growing by planting bulbs ready for the spring. Each child planted their own hyacinth bulb ready to take home at the end of term and hopefully it will flower in time for Christmas. The children planted a window box with 30 crocus bulbs ready for flowering next term. It is hoped all the children in the school will enjoy the sight of all those flowers in the spring.
