Picasso and The Ballet Russes

Picasso designed sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes in 1917

We have now covered many of the milestones in Picasso’s life, discussed modern art, cubism and war art. Currently, we are working on our own ‘Ballets Russes style’ ballet programmes, having looked at and discussed the Ballets Russes and Picasso’s involvement with the company. We are planning a trip to the Ballet.
As well as producing some exciting and challenging art, we have looked at Paris, and in particular Montmartre, where Picasso had his studio initially in the ‘Bateau Lavoir’ Building. We grew interested in France as a whole. Our French teacher Delphine, a native Breton, helped us enormously. We looked at Brittany, the birthplace of Picasso’s famous striped Breton Tee-shirt. Provence and in particular the Camargue, with its white horses, interested us. Presently, we are looking at the Cote d’Azur and Picasso’s later life there.

The pottery at Vallauris where Picasso produced his ceramics, should inspire some interesting clay work. After that, a brief immersion in printmaking; a visit to a printmakers studio would be wonderful. Picasso’s last years and his legacy will follow…eh voila!
