Hans Christian Andersen

(This year we have a combined group of Year 3 and Year 4)

As our knowledge of Hans Christian Andersen increased, we were able to branch out and explore in more detail the various threads which make up the project. We looked at Scandinavia from a geographical point, specifically studying maps. This led to more investigation, where the children learned about continents and countries, including the UK and Europe.

We have been looking at ways to write stories. Year 3 also began to adapt their own version of The Princess and the Pea in a book of their own. As a guide, they were given headings for each chapter and the children have retold the beginning of this story using their own language and creative ideas. Each page was then decorated with colourful designs.

Bringing art into our project and using The Princess and the Pea theme, the children designed and decorated colourful mattresses with their own patterns as part of a large collage on the classroom wall. They very much enjoyed the detailed aspect of this piece of artwork.

Year 4 has been working on observational drawings. They began by sketching self portraits. This is in preparation for the 3D work they will be beginning next term, when they will be creating papier mache Viking masks.
