The River Thames

Thames Foreshore

We visited the foreshore by the Millennium Bridge, with an archaeologist from The Museum of London. We collected many artefacts from the riverbed, including medieval pottery and Victorian clay pipes. We looked at our finds on the shore and the archaeologist helped us to name and date them.

We also had the good fortune to see a young heron gull attempting to eat an eel on the foreshore, whilst being watched by another hungry gull.

We spent the afternoon in The Museum of London, exploring the history of the Thames.

Extract from a child’s Thames Foreshore trip report

We met Dennis, our guide. He told us about the Thames river and its source. We went down the steps with Dennis and our teacher helped us. Dennis told us about his whistle. We did an exercise. We had a tray and we had to pick up things no bigger than our thumb nail. Dennis put the mat out and we all put our things on it. He told us which sort of pottery is Victorian and Roman. We were the only team to get rubber, but everybody got good things.
