The Iliad

Projects are beginning to brim with information, thoughts, ideas and beautiful illustrations. Each child has their own favourite character and reasons for their choice. As well as The Iliad, we have been looking, in general, at life in Ancient Greece. We will continue with this, adding more information to the children’s knowledge, as we go on with ‘The Iliad.’
The children produced beautifully researched homework over the half term. They were asked to find out about Greek food, ancient and modern. Some of the work produced can be seen in the images included on this page. Next week we shall have a ‘Greek food tasting day’ where the children will enjoy a ‘mini feast’ of flat bread, dolmades, Greek salad, Greek yoghurt, olives and other delights. If the weather is good we can have a Greek picnic in the playground.

Our Latin teacher at Dallington joined us for an afternoon and the children had an introduction to the language of ancient Greece. The children are enjoying this project so much and will be sad when the story comes to an end. I’m sure they would enjoy reading a children’s version of ‘The Odyssey’ in the Summer holidays. I recommend ‘The Wanderings of Odysseus’written by Rosemary Sutcliff and illustrated by Alan Lee. As with their other book, ‘Black Ships before Troy’, it is beautifully written and has exquisite illustrations.
Before the end of term, we shall make some Greek and Trojan helmets from papier mache. The children love working in 3D.
