Journeys

an omnibus

Everyday Journeys
We have visited the London Transport Museum and discovered the changes that have occurred to the public transport system over the last 200 years. We saw a restored horse bus that carried wealthy passengers over 200 years ago.

A Letter’s Journey
We have also been looking at the journey a letter takes from sender to receiver. We all sent a letter to a class friend and recorded how long it took to arrive.

A Strange Journey

Year 3 has been writing stories with the title ‘A Strange Journey’.

An omnibus was one of the first types of public transport used in London. It was very expensive to use, so the poor could not afford to travel on it.

The horses that pulled the omnibuses in London had to work very hard. Sometimes they would fall down dead in the street. To make their job easier, tramlines were laid on the road. The horse bus wheels would then roll along the tramlines.

The first types of underground train used in London were powered by steam. They had wooden doors that were closed by the guard. The guard would bang on the door with a cane and shout the station name. Some passengers were frightened travelling in these trains.
