| The Earth in Space |
Project
Book |
| The project for this term is The Earth in Space. Some of the areas to be explored are the earth’s layers, the atmosphere, the Solar System, rocks and fossils, volcanoes, earthquakes, maps and mapping. We were able to incorporate maths into the beginning of this project. The children studied 3D shapes and their properties and they were introduced to mathematical vocabulary, such as circumference, diameter and radius. As the term progressed, we investigated plate tectonics
which, in turn, brought up the subject of how volcanoes and earthquakes
are created. We are in the process of painting a volcano diagram, on
a large scale on the biggest wall in our area. |

Next week we will be visiting the Natural History Museum to help further the children’s enthusiasm for this area of learning. At the museum, we will investigate and explore the Earth rooms, with special focus on rock geology and volcanoes and earthquakes. We hope to spend some time in the earthquake room. The children will bring their sketch books and they will be asked to do some observational drawings. Towards the second part of this term, we will be focusing on the Solar System and space. It would be nice to make a trip into space, but we will probably have to make do with The Science Museum space galleries, which are pretty fantastic! |
