Colour and Potions

making a light box

The children were interested to learn that, depending on the quantities of each paint used, an infinite of number of shades or hues could be obtained by mixing two primary colours together.

We made a light box, using a cardboard box and three torches, each one covered with a different colour of cellophane – blue, green or red. When each beam of coloured light focused on the same spot within the light box, the children were able to see the combined light was white. This helped them understand the spectrum and how sunlight/white light is made from many colours. Please come in and ask your child to demonstrate!

One of the photographs, displays the children’s abilities in three dimensional construction work. They looked at an existing perfume box and, from this, they were able to make a net and construct their own boxes. The boxes are for an imaginary perfume of their choice.

As a group reading book , the children are enjoying George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We used this as a starting point to think about making our own imaginary potions and incorporating them into a piece of creative writing. We plan to make these stories into illustrated books and the children cannot wait to put them on display. Watch this space!
