Hans Christian Andersen

Line drawing of a swan from our trip to the Natural History Museum

As our knowledge of Hans Christian Andersen increased, we were able to branch out and explore in more detail the various threads which make up the project. We looked at Denmark from a geographical point, specifically studying maps and discussing geographical terms, such as ‘peninsula’ and ‘temperate.’ It was interesting to see where Denmark lay in the world. This led to more investigation, where the children learned about continents and countries, including the UK and Europe.

Birds are a recurring theme in Andersen’s work, so we have been studying birds in some depth. We visited the Natural History Museum earlier in the term and spent a few hours observing and drawing. The children are very proud of the work in their sketchbooks which show the great deal of effort they have put into them.

We have been looking at ways to begin stories. Taking the first paragraph of The Wild Swans as a starting point, the children have retold the beginning of this story using their own language and creative ideas. In the next half term, we shall be developing the children’s story writing skills further.

During the children’s weekly drama lessons, they are looking at the story of The Nightingale. They are working in groups and are developing a performance piece which we hope to present towards the end of the second half term.

The Nightingale theme will continue in the children’s art lessons. We will be creating some beautiful 3D work inspired by this story and hope to display it at the time of the performance.
