Voyage of Discovery.

Anansi and the Boastful Bullfrogs – Collage and Sewn felt.

We visited the October Gallery and looked at the work of El Anatsui and Owusu-Ankomah participating in a workshop linking our Spring work on Materials with our Summer focus. Using the traditional African and Caribbean tales of Anansi, as our literacy focus and the inspiration of the African art, we produced our own stories and a giant Anansi collage and several ‘Boastful Bullfrogs’ sewn in felt. This led us from the fictional Spider-Man to Epping Forest, to look at some real minibeasts in the woods and ponds. Our scientific exploration of animal life and habitats allowed us to collect lots of data, make observational drawings and return to research and find out more about what we had discovered.

The next part of our journey took us to Greenwich. We had a magnificent display in the Royal Observatory, where we learnt about the stars, planets and constellations and that we are all stardust! Then it was down the hill, to hear about Trim the Cat, at the National Maritime Museum, then participate in a puppet workshop. Trim was a real cat. He sailed with his owner, Matthew Flinders, to Australia 200 years ago. The children learnt about hard ship’s biscuits and rats – Trim was a very useful member of the crew. When we returned, we split into three crews and designed and constructed three vessels, to carry our Trim. We tested them to see if they would float in the water tray. Later, we ended our voyage of discovery with a picnic visit to the Tudor gardens, at the Geffrye Museum, to learn about plants. A busy creative term, full of new skills, knowledge and fun!
