Materials and Change

During the Spring term we extend and consolidate our concepts, skills and knowledge, across the curriculum, especially in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. The increased maturity and self-awareness of the children enables us to do so through a variety of focused and integrated activities. The children work independently for more sustained periods and have increased self-regulation. They experience group work, where they learn to share ideas, compromise and collaborate with one another, developing greater social awareness, self-confidence and enthusiasm. As the term progresses the work gathers momentum and ideas and creativity flow, giving us all that feel good factor.

Our topic focus this term is Materials and Change where we combine science and arts and crafts in an exploration of materials and how their properties can be used to create. We will use the practical work to produce factual pieces of writing with a selection of “How to…” pamphlets. We have used a variety of materials to weave mats and explore texture, we have used dyes to change and decorate t-shirts and used marbling inks to explore the properties of oil and water and that not all substances can dissolve..we have also explored this in making jelly and cakes, kitchen chemistry! During the second half of the term we will investigate Hats! We will look at the history of hats and design and make our own, creating a millinery department – London Fashion Week watch out, budding designers are about! We will also design outfits, using recycled materials, to match our hats! A very busy and productive term!
