The Shopping Basket by John Burningham (class display)

During the Spring term we extend and consolidate our concepts, skills and knowledge across the curriculum especially in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. The increased maturity and self-awareness of the children enables us to do so through a variety of focused and integrated activities. The children work independently for more sustained periods and have increased self-regulation. They experience group work, where they learn to share ideas, compromise and collaborate with one another, developing greater social awareness, self-confidence and enthusiasm. As the term progresses, the work gathers momentum and ideas and creativity flow, giving us all that feel- good factor. We have used The Shopping Basket by John Burningham, as our literacy focus. To create story books, we have designed and made puppets and painted illustrations for the story.

We have investigated Materials and visited the October Gallery to look at the work of Australian Aboriginal artists exploring pattern and journey. We took part in a workshop in the gallery. During the second half of the term, we will explore sound and design and make simple musical instruments, following a trip to the Barbican Centre to hear the LSO wind ensemble. We will go the the Hackney Empire to see a production of Peter and the Wolf, for our Spring treat. To further develop our language skills and narrative production, we will visit the Discovery Centre and participate in an exciting day of storytelling and roleplay.

Writing- development of narratives inspired by the story.
