Group display- The Shopping Basket. |
| During the Spring term we extend and consolidate our concepts, skills and knowledge across the curriculum especially in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. The increased maturity and self-awareness of our children enables us to do so through a variety of focused and integrated activities. The children work independently for more sustained periods and have increased self-regulation. They experience group work, where they learn to share ideas, compromise and collaborate with one another, developing greater social awareness, self-confidence and enthusiasm. As the term progresses, the work gathers momentum and ideas and creativity flow, giving us all that feel good factor. We have used ‘The Shopping Basket’, as our literacy focus, to create sustained narratives in our own books, using the desk-top publishing facilities. |

working together to make our shop |
We are learning to use simple punctuation and structure to construct a sequence of narrative events. We have designed book covers and produced collage art work and three-dimensional models of the book characters for our class display. We have created and painted a class shop and enjoy role play, acting out the story, learning about money, giving change and making shopping lists. In mathematics, with the help of The Number Crew videos and our computer software, we continue to extend our number work familiarising ourselves with numbers. We are learning about money, so we use number combinations to make twenty- and even one hundred! Our shop is called Carnival Stores. We will be making and playing our own musical instruments as part of our science topic on Sound. Our writing will be factual and our results represented by simple charts and data handling as we carry out simple experiments and explore this topic. For geography we are also exploring direction and simple mapping skills, plotting the route taken by Steven the central character in our text. We have linked this to our P.E, working on direction and travelling skills, as well as developing and practising simple large and small ball skills, skipping and hand-eye coordination. As we approach the holidays, we will make carnival masks based on the animal characters in our story and prepare for a Mardi Gras and an Egg Hunt. With lots of surprises to make for Mothers Day and the Spring festivals it will be a creative and busy time! |
