Ourselves

The first half of this term has been great. The children have been doing a lot of hands on activities. Our science topic over this term is called ‘Ourselves’. The children have had to share their opinions, think for themselves, understand that they can learn from their mistakes, recognise what they like and dislike and be objective about it.
This is a cross curricular topic and ties in with PSHE. As children reach year one they learn to become more independent and are able to solve problems for themselves. This topic helps the children to become independent and work well with others.
The children went on a great trip, to The Discovery Centre in the first half of the term. They learnt to tell stories and express themselves. They enjoyed learning about a space robot called Hooter, who missed his own planet and the stories he used to hear there. He kindly asked the children to tell him stories to make him feel at home on earth. Overall they had great fun and told some lovely stories using puppets that they made at The Discovery Centre. It was a wonderful day of play and exploration of language.

For art this term, we are learning about Andy Warhol. We have discussed what we like about his art and what we don’t like. We have studied the different kinds of media he used and we have used dye, paint and the computer to imitate some of his work. Our work is very good and we found that we had to work in steps to achieve our paintings or designs. Our final piece will be a picture of us, similar in style to his self portraits. It will be a lot of fun and fits in with our topic: Ourselves!
