Autumn and The Jolly Postman.

We used the 'Early Essentials' software to produce these pictures

Using Autumn as our introductory theme we have started the year with basic skills development. Activities include using modelling materials, for manipulative and fine-motor skills development, correctly orientating letters and numbers. Drawing for pencil control, concentration, observation and creativity. Construction kits are utilised for the development of creativity, manipulative and social skills. Patterning and sorting activities develop mathematical skills, together with counting activities, puzzles and computer software. Listening skills are developed using the listening table, story time, carrying out simple instructions and using the 'Talking Books' software. Writing is developed using the children’s personal experience. We introduce simple word books and word banks. Class reading activities, together with home reading tasks, develop literacy skills and knowledge of phonics and key words. Children are encouraged to be more independent and look after their possessions, taking responsibility for their coats, kits, book bags, lunches and ‘show and tell’ items. “Show and Tell”, discussion and role play develop verbal expression and confidence.

We are looking at Shape and exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We are also using the work of artist Paul Klee as a stimulus for collage and creative expression. After half term we will use The Jolly Postman as our literary focus and create a role play Post Office, where festive cards and gifts can be created in readiness for the holidays!

We used a variety of materials to produce a Klee collage
