Fairy Tales

 


It is always a joy to see children having a wide knowledge of our popular Fairy Tales: Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs… the list of the stories they know is long. We transformed our Christmas village display into a Fairy Tale Land, including a large 3-dimensional tower with a captured Rapunzel in it, letting down her plait.


We started our creative writing process by gathering around a table filled with magic objects: a golden ball, a bell, a necklace, a mysterious slipper, some emerald green magic potion. What magic powers do they possess? The children let their imaginations play and drew pictures of their own fairy tales and started to write down their own ideas. The adults supported them by acting as their “secretaries”, typing out their stories on the computer. Giving each other feedback on their stories, making suggestions on how to improve certain parts and praising ideas and expressions, gave the children great opportunities to improve their social and communication skills. The result is a wonderful golden book of “Year One’s Fairy Tales”, a lovely memory for everyone. And wasn’t it a funny coincidence to discover that our Maths books were full of references to Fairy Tales?

For the next weeks, the children have requested another very popular topic: Dinosaurs……
