Me And My Family

drawing 'themselves'

Every child has started a book about themselves, which, over the year, will be filled with self portraits, stories, photos and information. What is my favourite colour or my favourite animal? What is my favourite thing to do? So far, we have discovered a lot about each other and our families.

At the beginning of the academic year, the children looked at photos of when they were babies and were amazed by the fact how much they have grown and how much they have already learnt. They have painted beautiful pictures of their families and we have lovely figures of children on our wall- all dressed in very creative clothes, designed and made by the children.

Making use of observation- as well as fine motor skills- is a vital exercise for both reading and writing practice. The children were encouraged to take a close look at their favourite toys and equipment at school, then draw pictures of them.
If you come for a visit in Year 1 and the children are jiggling or pretending to bang on a drum, don’t be surprised: They are very enthusiastic about learning a new sound every day, using a phonetic approach. This leads to a joyful, varied and successful reading and writing practice. Our weekly entries in our diary, self made, of course, are getting longer by the week.

At the moment, the children are creating their own reading books. This is going well and they are eager to share their self made readers. Then it is time for probably the busiest and most exciting time of the year….Christmas!
