| This term Lower Nursery is a hive of activity as we investigate all the different ways in which we travel in our world both past and present on camels and horses, in cars, on bikes, buses, trains, boats, in submarines, planes, helicopters and rockets, over and under land and sea, in the air, even in outer space!! We learn about numbers with number plates and buses and it’s “tickets please” as “the wheels on the bus go round and round” and Mr Gumpy takes his motorcar for a drive in our role play area The children interpret this popular children’s story, ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ by John Burningham through group and individual art and craft activities and in their role play, creating their own books retelling the story and sequencing their ideas and developmentally writing. They use the magnifying glasses to examine a selection of maps and learn about direction in gym with traffic light games of stop and go! We explore slopes and speed in our block and construction area creating wheeled vehicles, we explore flight with a paper plane investigation to find the best wing shape and explore floating and sinking designing boats and testing them…some may become submarines! During the term we travel down the canal on the Angel II narrow boat in our life jackets, we travel from the Angel Lock at Danbury Street through a long canal tunnel to emerge at St. Pancras Lock. The children identify the birds, coots, moorhens, ducks, drakes and ducklings, even a crane! They help push open the lock gates and have a very exciting day out. |

The environment and stimulus provided also enables
the children to explore and follow their own interests and needs through
free-flow play and free choice resources. So far we have had picnics,
a café with a team of cooks, chefs and waiters , numerous medical
emergencies with the babies requiring the Doctor’s Kits, dens
requiring protection by superheroes, journeys into space in spaceships
and on crowded buses and cars, gardening and planting herbs for the
fete, cooking, baking bread and designing pudding labels for the fete
too. In the second half of the term we shift focus to the other current
children’s passion the animal kingdom and our literacy focus Handa’s
Surprise’ by Eileen Browne, we will explore the animals of Africa
and create our own animal safari as we make lions and giraffes, chimpanzees
and elephants, exploring their habitats and how they live. As usual
a very busy and dynamic term full of learning and development where
we respond to the children’s needs and interests embedding literacy,
numeracy, knowledge and understanding of the world within the child
and adult initiated creative and skills developing activities and the
enabling environment. The children learn through play and exploration,
active engagement and challenge, discovering connections and enhancing
their thinking and social skills. We welcome new friends to the nursery
family this term and prepare those who will be moving on in September
on their learning journey. |
