Healthy Eating and Canal Trip

our boat entering a lock

Canal trip

We would like to tell you about our trip on the canal.
There is a canal, not too far away from school, called Regent’s canal. Every year, the children from Lower Nursery go in groups of 6 or 7, children with their teachers, assistants and some parents. We pack a little snack- and this time we packed our raincoats, too, because we weren’t too sure about the weather.
When we arrived, Paul, the skipper, had already moored the narrow boat so that we could get on. On board, he told us all about the narrow boat and why we must wear life jackets.
And off we went! After a little while, there was a very long and dark tunnel. At first we thought it might be a little scary but, actually, it was great fun. We listened to our voices echoing and even invented our own tunnel song: “We do believe in fairies”. It seemed as though the narrowboat was floating in space, because the water in the tunnel was very dark and completely calm- it looked fantastic!

After we came out of the tunnel we looked out for all the different animals that live on the canal. We saw duck families, goslings, herons, terrapins and even a toad!
Unfortunately, we saw some bottles and plastic bags too, but the best thing we saw, was a pirate ship! It had a real pirate flag on it.
Paul let us help with opening the locks. We had to get out of the boat then push the big oak beam aside, so that the gate would open and we could go through. It was quite heavy, but great fun too! After this hard work, we enjoyed the snack that we had brought and, in no time, we were already back at the City Road Basin, where our mummies and daddies were waiting for us!

Healthy Living

This term, we have been looking at food, and healthy eating. We have talked about which foods we like and those we do not like. Pasta is a popular choice in Lower Nursery! We have also tried listening to our heartbeats and taking each other’s pulse. It was sometimes hard to feel it, but we learned that, without a pulse, we could not live. As the weather got warmer, we discussed the importance of drinking lots of water to keep ourselves hydrated. On the creative side, we looked through food magazines and made collages of what we like to eat. We also painted pictures. The children have enjoyed experimenting with different foods at snack time when the biscuit tin was replaced with a ‘Healthy Snack Box’. We discussed what sorts of foods should be included and which were best saved for special treats. We thought about how food is important for growing and for energy and why certain foods are healthier than others. The children came up with some great ideas for the snack box and we have enjoyed rice cakes, oat cakes, cheese, raisins, dried apple and many different kinds of fruit and vegetables. We have also continued with our healthy eating in our cooking lessons. We have made pasta salad, fruit smoothies and even a healthy chocolate cake, using no sugar! Everyone agreed it tasted just as good as the real thing. This half term we will be cooking things to have as treats. The ‘food’ theme has continued into our role play area, as we created the ‘Dallington Diner’. The children helped make menus and set up café/restaurant. We have enjoyed taking turns at being the chef or the customer.
