Healthy Living This term, we have been looking at food, and healthy eating. We have talked about which foods we like and those we do not like. Pasta is a popular choice in Lower Nursery! We have also tried listening to our heartbeats and taking each other’s pulse. It was sometimes hard to feel it, but we learned that, without a pulse, we could not live. As the weather got warmer, we discussed the importance of drinking lots of water to keep ourselves hydrated. On the creative side, we looked through food magazines and made collages of what we like to eat. We also painted pictures. The children have enjoyed experimenting with different foods at snack time when the biscuit tin was replaced with a ‘Healthy Snack Box’. We discussed what sorts of foods should be included and which were best saved for special treats. We thought about how food is important for growing and for energy and why certain foods are healthier than others. The children came up with some great ideas for the snack box and we have enjoyed rice cakes, oat cakes, cheese, raisins, dried apple and many different kinds of fruit and vegetables. We have also continued with our healthy eating in our cooking lessons. We have made pasta salad, fruit smoothies and even a healthy chocolate cake, using no sugar! Everyone agreed it tasted just as good as the real thing. This half term we will be cooking things to have as treats. The ‘food’ theme has continued into our role play area, as we created the ‘Dallington Diner’. The children helped make menus and set up café/restaurant. We have enjoyed taking turns at being the chef or the customer. |
