Our Busy Summer Term

One of the groups started the term looking at spring flowers. We did observational drawings of a vase of tulips which then followed onto still life paintings. Using jigsaw maker on the computer we drew pictures of the tulips in the vase and showed what excellent mouse control we have. We also made lovely spring flower mobiles.
To learn about life cycles we read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. Using dye and wax crayons we then drew our favourite picture from the book. To follow on from life cycles we went on a farm visit and saw all the baby spring animals such as lambs and chicks. During our farm visit we went on a tractor ride and fed the lambs and horses. Of course we washed our hands after touching any animals. We were also allowed to stroke the guinea pigs, rabbits and puppies very gently. It was a fun but exhausting day out. When we were back at school we spoke about our farm trip and drew a picture of our favourite animal that we had seen. We also looked at and discussed all the photos from the farm visit. At the farm there were many scarecrows. Recently we have enjoyed stuffing stockings with paper to create a scarecrow body and then dressing it and painting it. We have called him Strawlegs!

The other group has been learning about Spring, growth and the changing seasons. We learned about the life-cycle of a butterfly while we enjoyed the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Now we have a Hungry Caterpillar display up on the wall.
Much of our learning about the seasons and animals was brought alive by our trip to Willows Farm. The trip has had a positive effect on conversation, observation skills, counting skills and general knowledge and interest about the world. The stairwell up to Lower Nursery is decorated with photographs and drawings from the trip, so please do take a look.

In the nursery we have been learning through play. Particular favourites this half term have been the dinosaurs and the LINKY RINKS. We now have a dinosaur stencil book to extend our play and learning. The links are used for tails, leads, collars, necklaces, bracelets and ankle chains.

We have been consolidating our pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills, building up our concentration skills and learning to share and co-operate.
