Sleeping Beauty and The Weather

Part of our ‘Sleeping Beauty’ display

This term we have looked at the classic fairy tale, ‘Sleeping Beauty’. The children have enjoyed listening to the story, both in class and also the wonderful Tchaikovsky version in their weekly music lesson. The children have really enjoyed acting out this play so, as well as doing a small production ourselves, we shall be visiting The Little Angel Theatre, to see the play. We have made a display where the children drew their character. The children applied a variety of materials, for hair, wings and favourite crowns . They enjoyed using lots of different coloured tissue paper to create the title of the display. Plenty of pink paint was used for Sleeping Beauty’s castle, as you can see from the picture!

We have continued with our weekly cookery lesson too, making everything from Banana Bread to Chocolate Fondue! It is an activity that gives an opportunity to develop in all six areas of the Foundation Stage. In groups they learn to share equipment, take turns (personal, social and emotional development), weigh and measure ingredients, (mathematical development) and watch things change when they are cooked or cooled down(knowledge and understanding of the world). Fine motor skills are used to cut and chop ingredients, (physical development). The children decorate or decide how they want their individual creation to look, (creative development). We discuss what we will be cooking, the sequences in the process and what they predict will happen and why (communication, language and literacy). The children love the cookery lessons and are very keen to show their parents what they have made. We have had a very happy term here in Lower Nursery and look forward to the next one!

Rain, rain, go away, please come back another day…..
This term, we have looked at 'The Weather”. Every morning, at circle time, we discuss the day's weather. Is it sunny? Is it raining? Cloudy? Frosty or even snowing….? We put up a symbol for the weather, on our daily chart - often to find that it has changed by the end of the day! Oh well, that’s what happens, sometimes, if you live in London….
We have made special weather books in which the children have drawn the weather of the day. We discuss the activities we can do/wear, according to the weather. Did you know that clouds are made out of tiny drops of water? When the clouds get too heavy, the water falls down as rain, hail or snow. It has to be really cold for it to snow.

It was great fun to dress up for different kinds of weather. We used umbrellas, sunglasses, shorts and T-shirts.
We made a really big display. We decided to show four different kinds of weather: rainy, cloudy, sunny and frosty. We made rain out of string and tin foil, a big cotton wool cloud, a sun from different kinds of yellow paper and frosty snowmen. The big arrow in the middle can be moved to show the day's weather.

We also read and listened to weather poems and learned songs about the weather.

What is the weather like today? The arrow shows it!
