Ourselves and Autumn

Funnybones

Our initial theme focus is ‘Ourselves and Autumn’ during this settling in period. We have painted self portraits, printed our hand prints, looked at our family albums, used the computers to produce art and explored our human body through our literacy focus Funnybones by Janet & Alan Ahlberg, as well as factual books. Role play further develops language and social skills in our Doctors Surgery role play area where appointments are made, treatment is prescribed and operations performed often needing an overnight stay in hospital and in our domestic home corner, where meals are cooked and babies are fed and nurtured! We combine this with exploring the changes we see occurring around us, leaves are examined with pumpkins, conkers, acorns and sycamore keys, autumnal festivals are celebrated; Diwali, Halloween and Bonfire Night, with rockets, witches, saris, and stories. Owl Babies by Martin Waddell combines both themes in a group display of collaborative art work, where the children worked together to produce a backdrop, with group and individual owls for our display.

In the second half of the term our attention turns to the festive season and our focus text is Santasaurus by Niamh Sharkey combining the children’s fascination with dinosaurs with a Christmas story. We will also explore light with investigations of mirrors and torches, creating stained glass windows and using reflective materials in our decorative creations. Our home corner is transformed with a roaring fire in the fireplace. We are learning lots of new songs with Sarah for our concert and looking forward to our end of term party. A busy and productive term of learning and development!
