Light

preparing a pumpkin-look at all the seeds!!

There are a lot of things to be celebrated when the days get shorter and darker: Halloween, Guy Fawkes, Diwali and Christmas….so our theme for the festive season is
‘Light’.
Our favourite book this term was “Pumpkin Soup” by Helen Cooper. The best pumpkin soup you ever tasted; made by the cat, the squirrel and the duck. The children made wonderful pumpkins, using different materials and techniques. They watched a pumpkin being carved into a scary lantern, which we lit at circle time when we ate pumpkin biscuits. We stirred the ‘soup’ in the water tray and made character masks for role play!
If you go into Lower Nursery now, something else might scare you. The children made an “Incey Wincey Spider” display. Lots and lots of spiders are sitting in a big web, waiting to catch some flies. But spiders are actually not scary, they are quite fascinating. Did you know that they have eight eyes and legs but no ears? They “hear” with the hairs on their bodies!

Halloween was swiftly followed by Bonfire Night with all the amazing fireworks lighting up the night sky. The children created firework pictures and rockets to brighten up the nursery and explore the theme of Light. Before we start with our Christmas preparations, we have another wonderful event to celebrate, “Diwali”, the festival of lights; a traditional Hindu celebration. Around Christmas time, we get really busy in Lower Nursery. Celebrating the different traditions from different countries, we will have an advent wreath, an advent calendar to count the days until Christmas and, of course, lots of songs for our Carol Concert, art activities, gifts to make, a role play Post Office for all that Christmas post and baking and….You see, Christmas time is probably the busiest time of year for us!
