Ourselves and Autumn

The children have settled into their new school year with ease. We have developed many new friendships and loved spending time with old friends too.

With the focus being ourselves and autumn we have learnt lots about our bodies and the things we can do. We have drawn our body parts and over a period of a week learnt the techniques of screen printing. The process was loads of fun and the results were fantastic.
We have also spent our days looking at our environment in which we live for example our families and homes. Through discussion and use of a variety of resources, in a group and one to one, we have discovered that other family structures or homes may be different from ours. We had fun building our homes out of boxes and making peg people to represent each family member. It was great to role play with these creations. Now that autumn is setting in and winter is on its way we will be dressing up warmly and observing the ever- changing weather patterns.

We have been looking at the position of our features and practising drawing what we look like. We have also had fun trying to dress cut-outs of our bodies. We have enjoyed looking at the things our bodies can and cannot do, putting our elbow on our knee or trying to put our nose in our belly button. We have also enjoyed learning about different animals living in our homes. We call these animals pets. We all thought we would like a cat or maybe a dog, but thought a snake would be a bit scary or a rat quite exciting.

The children who are new to Dallington have settled in well. Many of the children are siblings and so are already familiar with parts of the building and some of the adults.
The children have quickly learnt the routines and appear to be enjoying a wide variety of activities based upon the topics of ourselves and autumn. We drew and painted self portraits and celebrated Jewish New Year with apples and honey. We compared sizes of hands, feet, shoes and socks and have looked at many different types of homes. We had fun playing with gloop and enjoyed experiencing the texture. In studying autumn we have made leaf prints and rubbings and will continue to monitor the seasonal changes throughout the year. We are visiting the library on Thursdays and enjoy the stories that Debbie the librarian reads to us. To celebrate National Book Week we had cakes and juice at the library and took home some story colouring sheets. We are improving our culinary skills and have made biscuits and egg white ghosts for Halloween. We enjoy gym in the basement on Mondays and singing with Sarah on Tuesdays.
